    Switch to Eco-Friendly Packaging

Incorporating sustainability into retail operations is like turning a cruise ship—it takes some effort, but the impact is worth it! One practical step we took was switching to eco-friendly packaging, which was a bit like convincing everyone to eat kale—initially met with skepticism, but ultimately embraced. We reduced plastic use by implementing biodegradable bags and encouraged reusable totes with incentives that made customers feel like eco-warriors. I remember the day we introduced our first recycled packaging line—it was as satisfying as seeing a kid choose a carrot over candy. By making these changes, not only did we reduce our environmental footprint, but we also inspired our customers to join us on the green journey. Sustainability isn’t just a trend; it’s the future of retail, and every step counts.

    Partner for Sustainable Goals

Advancing sustainability, or incorporating it into your strategic goals, is a practice that retail operations should be putting more focus on, and partnering with other stakeholders who also have the same goals and objectives. All aspects require careful review and consideration, on how even the small actions can be rewarding to your business and operations. As an example, assess the packaging of your products/goods within your value chain. Work collaboratively on reducing packaging material or utilizing recycled material, as well as shared resources such as reusable and/or refillable containers. Once you establish the objective with your supplier, the partnership now strengthens as you work towards a sustainability goal together in alignment.

    Utilize Virtual Tours for Efficiency

We incorporate sustainability practices into our retail operations through our innovative 3-D virtual tours and comprehensive CAD work. By creating detailed 3-D scans and digital doubles of retail spaces, we significantly reduce the need for travel, allowing companies to virtually visit and assess store locations in their current condition. This technology supports sustainability by cutting down on carbon emissions associated with frequent travel. Our office-based CAD work further enhances this process by providing precise floor plans and as-built surveys. We also identify equipment and fixtures, simplifying planning for renovations, new planogram implementations, or routine virtual walkthroughs by higher-ups. These practices not only streamline operations but also contribute to a greener environment by minimizing the carbon footprint of our clients' retail activities.

    Promote Second-Hand Marketplaces

Implementing sustainability practices into retail is important to many of the brands we work with. Several brands have second-hand marketplaces (like MM LaFleur's Second Act and Sarah Flint's Sequel) that offer customers the opportunity to reduce the amount of product that ends up in landfills.

Many brands are also implementing more energy-efficient systems into their stores (lighting and HVAC, for example) and are actively trying to reduce the amount of paper and cardboard they're producing by offering emailed receipts and reusable tote bags.

Some brands will also collect competitors' products for upcycling, such as Madewell's Do Well Recycling program, which collects used jeans in exchange for store credit.
